Towell Falls, located within the Palouse region’s rolling hills, showcases the natural beauty of the area. Just over an hour south of Spokane, the trailhead is located at the historic Escure Ranch. Now a preserved landmark and free campground—provide testament to the area’s farming heritage and unique history. The journey to Towell Falls is a scenic 3.3-mile walk through grasslands, revealing two separate waterfalls where Rock Creek splits into two streams. Despite the idyllic landscape, visitors should be mindful of seasonal hazards like ticks, rattlesnakes, and poison oak. This dual cascade, hidden within the vast expanse of the Palouse, offers a unique outdoor adventure for those willing to explore its unique and unexpectedly wild terrain.
Accessing Towell Falls begins with a 24-mile drive from Interstate-90, exiting at Sprague, leading you to the Escure Ranch horse camp, serving as the gateway to the falls.
The 6.5-mile round-trip journey traverses an old ranch road, resulting in an underwhelming journey. For a quicker visit, mountain bikes and horses are allowed along the trail.
Towell Falls features a 15-foot drop, where Rock Creek cascades over a basalt ledge into a wide basin. The immediate vicinity of the falls, adorned with thickets of poison oak, limiting access for those seeking a closer look.
Located on BLM land, Towell Falls does not require a pass for access. The open, unshaded trail warrants preparation for sun exposure, particularly in the warmer months.
The Palouse region, renowned for its vast grassland hills and agricultural beauty, is a magnet for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike. Notable for its Ice Age flood-formed lakes, the area boasts prime fishing and boating spots, with Rock Lake leading as a favorite destination. Nearby Williams and Badger Lake offer stocked fishing opportunities, further enhancing the outdoor allure of this distinctive Washington landscape. The region is interlaced with charming small towns such as Colfax and Pullman, each boasting unique historical sites and local culture.
Beyond Towell Falls, the Palouse offers a wealth of attractions. Palouse Falls State Park stands as a regional highlight, featuring one of the Pacific Northwest’s most breathtaking waterfalls. Lyons Ferry State Park provides amenities for RVs and campers along the Snake River. The John Wayne Pioneer Trail, accessible from Tekoa, provides miles of trails for biking and horseback riding, tracing the path of an old railway through the scenic countryside. For panoramic views of the Palouse, Steptoe Butte‘s unique geological formation presents an unparalleled vantage point, inviting visitors to survey the rolling hills and lush farmland that define this iconic region of Eastern Washington.
