Hog Canyon Falls, a picturesque cascade located in the Palouse region of Eastern Washington, just 30 minutes from Spokane, is a testament to the natural beauty that the area has to offer. Flowing into the northern end of Hog Lake, the falls cascade over a series of basalt rocks, creating a breathtaking scene. Access to this stunning location, however, has been significantly limited due to the area around Hog Canyon being gated off by the landowners. This decision was made in response to the detrimental impact of visitor behavior on the environment, highlighting the importance of preserving the natural integrity of such sites. Although recent restrictions have limited direct access to Hog Canyon below the falls, the beauty of the cascades can still be fully appreciated from the overlooks provided along the trails.
Located 30 miles from Spokane, WA, access to Hog Canyon Falls is through the Fishtrap Recreation Area, highlighting the ease of reaching this public BLM land.
A 2-mile loop trail guides visitors to stunning overlooks of the falls and lake, with pathways branching across the southwest side of Hog Lake for further exploration.
Hog Canyon Falls playfully skips down a 50-foot basalt canyon, cascading in a series of charming smaller waterfalls. This picturesque scene unfolds exclusively in early spring,
Visitors are reminded that while the recreation area is publicly accessible, the eastern side of the lake and the falls’ immediate vicinity are on private property.
The vicinity of Hog Canyon Falls is a gateway to diverse outdoor activities, with Hog Lake and Fishtrap Lake providing settings for hiking, birdwatching, and nature photography. Beyond these, larger lakes such as Rock Lake and Bonnie Lake extend the invitation for kayaking, boating, and fishing. Wildlife enthusiasts will find the nearby Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge an essential visit, offering encounters with the region’s unique fauna, including moose, elk, owls and bald eagles.
