Comet Falls

Comet Falls, one of Mt. Rainier National Park’s most spectacular waterfalls, is named for its resemblance to a comet’s tail. Cascading over 460 feet in four distinct drops, with the largest single drop measuring 301 feet, it stands as one of the tallest waterfalls in the park. Located on the western side of Mt. Rainier, the falls are fed by the Van Trump Creek, originating from the melting snow and glaciers above. The trail to Comet Falls offers a rewarding hike through old-growth forests, culminating in a stunning view of the waterfall and the surrounding rugged landscape.

The Drive

Access to Comet Falls begins with a drive through the Nisqually Entrance of Mt. Rainier National Park, following the Longmire area directions.

The Hike

A 3.8-mile round-trip hike on the Comet Falls Trail, considered moderately challenging, leads through lush forests to the base of the falls.

The Falls

Comet Falls impresses with its height and the powerful flow of water, especially in the late spring and early summer months.
