Stevens Lakes Falls, situated along the picturesque trail leading to the Upper and Lower Stevens Lakes in Idaho, showcases two mesmerizing waterfalls that capture the essence of the area’s natural beauty. The journey begins with a captivating 20-foot waterfall at a creek crossing, known as lower Stevens Lakes Falls, set against a backdrop of lush alpine foliage. As the trail ascends, adventurers will encounter upper Stevens Lakes Falls—a dramatic 60-foot plunge into a narrow slot canyon. A detour allows intrepid explorers to scramble to the base of the falls, feeling the mist on their skin. This trail offers a variety of natural wonders, including two waterfalls, serene alpine lakes, and the chance to summit Stevens Peak, making it an unparalleled outdoor adventure.
A short 1-mile drive on a rugged dirt road from Mullan, Idaho, leads to the Stevens Lakes trailhead. Note that access may be restricted during winter months due to snow.
The trail presents a moderate challenge with a steady incline, reaching the lower falls at 1.4 miles and the upper falls at a switchback at the 1.8 mile mark.
Lower Stevens Lake Falls offers a picturesque cascade amidst alpine greenery, while the upper falls showcase a rare slot canyon waterfall, providing a spectacle not commonly found in Idaho.
Be mindful of bear activity in the region; unleashed dogs can provoke unnecessary bear encounters. To ensure safety and respect for all trail users during the busy summer months, please keep your dogs leashed.
Beyond the allure of Stevens Lake, the area brims with additional trails and hidden gems. The Lost Lake Trail shares the trailhead, inviting hikers to explore further, including a loop to Stevens Peak and down to Lost Lake, which conceals its own waterfall. Willow Creek along the path is dotted with secret cascades for those seeking off-the-beaten-path wonders. The Silver Valley is a haven for alpine lake enthusiasts, with nearby Revett Lake and Blossom Lakes further into the Idaho Panhandle, each hiding waterfalls along their outlets. Communities like Kellogg, Wallace, and Mullan serve as charming bases for exploration, each with unique attractions and amenities.
The Silver Valley corridor along I-90 is steeped in history and outdoor recreation, offering a diverse array of activities from skiing and snowboarding at Lookout Pass and Silver Mountain, to exploring the rich mining heritage of Wallace, Idaho, with its guided mine tours and exceptional dining. Adding to the region’s allure, the Pulaski Tunnel Trail near Wallace takes hikers on a historical journey to the 1910 fire’s heroic site, while the Route of the Hiawatha transforms a historic railroad into a breathtaking mountain biking adventure through historic train tunnels and trestle bridges, making the Silver Valley a perfect blend of adventure and culture.
