THE CURRENT EDITION

The fifth edition

By Gregory Plumb · Mountaineers Books · Published 2013

From well-known roadside cascades to waterfalls reached on foot, the fifth edition brings together more than 700 waterfalls across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Its descriptions and maps give readers a starting point for choosing where to go and what to look for.

This edition added 70 waterfall entries and 19 maps. A quick-reference table covers scenic ratings, waterfall forms, access, seasons, and distinguishing features, making it easier to compare destinations as you plan.

Whether you’re building a weekend itinerary or learning more about a familiar waterfall, the guide offers a way to explore the region one cascade at a time.

Trail conditions, access rules, and fees change. Check current land-manager guidance before heading out.

Four decades of waterfall exploration

The story began in 1983 with Gregory Plumb’s Waterfalls of the Pacific Northwest. Over the following decades, Plumb revised and expanded the book into Waterfall Lover’s Guide Pacific Northwest, bringing a geographer’s perspective to the region’s waterfalls.

  • 1983: The original guide. Waterfalls of the Pacific Northwest introduced Plumb’s guide to the region’s falls.
  • 2013: The fifth edition. Published by Mountaineers Books, this expanded edition describes more than 700 waterfalls in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.
  • Spring 2027: The sixth edition. Gregory Plumb and Miles Bergsma continue the guide’s story together.
